Thus far, and sans WA (as yet untallied), it would appear that the LNP has only picked up one new seat in the Senate. Even if they only get another three from WA, it's still a complete wipeout for the LNP in the Senate!

There is hope yet! Although, it still remains to be seen just which way all of these bloody PUP members will vote in the Big House. My guess is, half of them will turn independent within 12-months.

For the latest on the Senate result, see:

Hard to say, Brother G, it remains to be seen which way these 'independents' will roll.

But on the surface, yeah, it looks like we can at least sleep a little easier tonight.

Pauline f@#$ing Hanson! What were the people of NSW thinking?

guess the torries won, resoundingly, rud's head on a block for what gilligan really did.

a big no vote against carbon, trick is now how does he stop that rot? monies paid out in advance, didn't help our budget.

anyhow how can we do better and bring us all together as good neighbours at least.

and one green vote makes melbourne a green city, i like that??

the next three years start now.

Maybe a double dissolution election in a few months when people have had a little time to see what an Abbott government is like would be fun

Wow, I just looked at my electorate results as at midnight last night (81% counted) and there was a 19.5% vote for 'Others' with an increase of 13.5%! More than Labor polled. Can only hope that the Senate puts a stick in the spokes for Abbott and everything goes tits up.

It is really sad when I wake up and see my 21 yr old son has put a status on FB reflecting his utter despair at the result and feeling totally desolate at what the immediate future holds. I just have to get outside and listen to the birds and try to remember that everything passes.....

    grasshopper,

matters not now what a pole may find, the voters voted for no carbon tax, now that doesn't mean that's what they'll get if nothing else our governance system is full of liars and cheats, anything to get a vote. now if they put on the slip as well do you want or not want a carbon tax, then the truth may have prevailed.

without saying all qlder's should move to other states where public health is better, our lot won't change, as for the NBN, this community and others up this way were never going to get it, by cable.

mith, i can understand your son, we are at the receding end of our life, his is all in front of him, maybe with some of us your son and his friends could get this flat ball rolling on having all in australia recognised as australian's(that is the current status quo) change the name if all don't like it, after all it is only a name with a bed sheet as recognition, the people are the country.

no matter torries look after silver spooner's and the bosses, no matter waht they say to get a vote, and since about hawk's time the labor party has gone the same way, looking after the silver spooner's.

Actually, 43.4% (55% after preferences, representing a +7.8% swing) of the vote makes Melbourne a Green city ;)

Actually, the 'No Carbon Tax Climate Sceptics' vote represents only a 0.13% (including a -0.07% swing) of the Senate electorate. A proverbial drop in the ocean ;)

Thus far, 24 individuals (representing just 0.04% of the voting populace) in my electorate (970 and a similar 0.04% across Victoria) voted for Jo and Beth. Where are you, fellow anarchists? We need to talk!

Well, I really must get out into this sun! I trust you all enjoyed our 2-minutes of illusionary power, and that the next 3-years will not be too much of a hardship. Hey, we may even be able to persuade a few more of you to help us dissolve the current system and in its place replace it with a system that is truly participatory? We live in hope. Peace out, Markos

This was a General Election. A referendum is a very different thing.

The Libs would never put the carbon tax to a referendum because they know it wouldn't pass. To claim it as a referendum is just chest puffing, bullying tactics. This should be clear no matter how you feel about the Carbon Tax.

lol grahame, sorry i must look silly, but it's only the way they dress me, every election is a referendum, people who swing vote for what grabs them. nothing wrong with that, that's the system.

what do i gain from bullying?? absolutely nothing. lets change the system in some way.

Andrew Robb described the Carbon Tax as just a symbol on Insiders this morning.
The election result was about people being upset at Labor's internal squabbles and perceived instability, even though it was a fairly good reformist Government, under very difficult economic and political circumstances, its not about its or the LNP's policies.

The future challenge will be a shrinking revenue base, due to economic downturn, ageing population and too many tax cuts and middle class welfare mainly by Howard.
The only long term solution is to get more taxes or cut services.
We know the LNP are going to cut services, their preferred tax rise is the GST (which hurts the poor)
