Permaculture Design Certificate Course
The 72-hour Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course allows you to be the change you want to see in the world. Based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, it provides skills and solid knowledge in Permaculture design as a science that can create abundant ecosystems sustainably in the backyard, a small farm or on a larger broad acre landscape.
The problems of the world are becoming increasingly complex but the answers remain embarrassingly simple.
Permaculture integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.
To date, thousands of permaculture designers have been certified through this course. They now comprise a global network of educators, ecological activists, individuals and groups of committed people working together to change the way we view and design our landscapes. These Permaculture designers influence major corporations and create new business alternatives.
The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of Permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS
Geoff Lawton is the main facilitator for this PDC course. He is a Permaculture consultant, designer and teacher. He first took his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course with Bill Mollison in 1983. He holds a Diploma in Permaculture Education, Design, Implementation, System Establishment, Administration and Community Development given by the founder of Permaculture, Bill Mollison.
Geoff has undertaken thousands of jobs teaching, consulting, designing, administrating and implementing, in 6 continents and close to 50 countries around the world. Clients have included private individuals, groups, communities, governments, aid organizations, non-government organisations and multinational companies.
He has currently educated over 15,000 students in Permaculture worldwide. These include graduates of the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course and courses focused on the practical design of sustainable soil, water, plant, and legal and economic systems.
Ben Cains moved to Australia from New Zealand in 2006. He’s now an active member in the Permaculture world.
With a passion for helping people become resilient, responsible for themselves and the environment, Permaculture was the perfect match. Since then he has become the Zaytuna Farm Intern Manager and Geoff Lawton’s P.A. He’s also been taking on consultancy and teaching roles.
Aaron’s interest in permaculture began over 4 years ago when he was introduced to it by a work colleague. This interest grew into a passion over the next year or so and this led to him converting his concrete back yard to an abundant source of healthy food.
Through the available spaces of his friends and family he continued to gain his experience designing and growing food in a variety of situations from large suburban backyards to small urban apartment spaces, the majority of his experiences coming from warm temperate and subtropical environments.
This gives him a constant inspiration to do everything he can to further the awareness and depth of understanding of permaculture practices in Australia and the rest of the world.
Zaytuna Farm has a number of active teaching and support staff, including interns within the PRI diploma program. Interns and staff are mentored by Geoff and will support him throughout this course.
Future Studies and Opportunities
The PDC serves as a foundation for further permaculture work and study and is a prerequisite for the Diploma in Permaculture Design, offered through The Permaculture Institute. Credit for this course is now accepted by a growing number of universities around the world.
ABOUT THE LOCATION
This PDC will be taught at Zaytuna Farm, home of The Permaculture Research Institute in The Channon, Northern NSW. As one of the leading Permaculture demonstration sites in the world, Zaytuna Farm has a range of functioning systems including water harvesting, food production, and a very productive animal husbandry. All of which will add to the learning experience and make this course a very rich experience and one not to be missed.
Historically many PDC’s have, where viable, provided low/no cost scholarships to those from developing countries or communities. At PRI Australia, we support this endeavour by actively providing sponsorship positions at our Master Plan sites in developing countries. Course fees from PRI Australia off-set the cost/s of teaching those in desperate need.
INCLUDED IN YOUR FEES
Included in your course fees is Bill Mollison’s 576 page PERMACULTURE Designers’ Manual.
Your fees include camping accommodation (in self-provided tents), full catering with three meals per day plus morning and afternoon tea, after hours internet access, and an abundance of Permaculture examples throughout one of the most successful permaculture demonstration farms ever built.

One of Geoff’s favourite phrases is “getting a result” and his results on the ground and with students is impressive. The quality of a PDC course is not evidenced in the teacher, but in how active the students are able to implement the designs after they leave the course and Geoff has some of the most active PDC students in the world.
Geoff’s work is based on the permaculture principles laid down in the 1970s by Australian permaculture founder Bill Mollison.
The PRI Earthworks course was exactly what I needed. As I’m in the process of converting my farm property to permaculture, I could not have asked for a more topical course. I was glued to every word Geoff Lawton said. Likely to be back for more.Gregor D
I headed to Australia in January of 2010 to study permaculture with Geoff and Nadia Lawton at Zaytuna Farm. There was nowhere in the U.S. to go and study water harvesting techniques, so I traveled to the Southern hemisphere. I had taken my PDC three years before and was working in the realm of non-profit sustainability education, and was looking to expand my practical skillset, particularly in the area of water harvesting earthworks and perennial polyculture. The three months that…Lindsay Dailey
I traveled from Europe to Australia to learn Permaculture at its birthplace. A PDC (Permaculture Design Course) here offered me the theory and practical application from one source. To see and feel applied Permaculture for more than 10 years is not so easy to find.Heinrich
Zaytuna Farm is an ideal site for attending your PDC. AS it is a working Permaculture farm it has lots of examples of techniques that you learn in the PDC, so you can see them in action. EG. There are many food forests in various stages and have been established using different strategies and plant mixes. The importance of placement of elements e.g. animals and plants, are seen and felt on a working established farm. There are examples of larger…Karen
This is a WONDERFUL SITE. I AM READY TO MOVE. :)Latifa Abdul-Royal
The best permaculture site to learn from.Taufiq Bin Jemain
During my stay at Zaytuna Farm I gained an enormous amount of confidence both in my ability to work within permaculture systems, and to teach about them. The vast variety of permaculture systems on the property provide a unique opportunity to to build understanding and hands on skills quickly. One of the most unique aspects of the property is its interconnected nature, specifically with regard to the water systems. I would highly recommend Zaytuna Farm to anyone that is highly…Rob Avis
