Permaculture Design Certificate Course
The 72-hour Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course allows you to be the change you want to see in the world. Based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, it provides skills and solid knowledge in Permaculture design as a science that can create abundant ecosystems sustainably in the backyard, a small farm or on a larger broad acre landscape.
The problems of the world are becoming increasingly complex but the answers remain embarrassingly simple.
Permaculture integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.
To date, thousands of permaculture designers have been certified through this course. They now comprise a global network of educators, ecological activists, individuals and groups of committed people working together to change the way we view and design our landscapes. These Permaculture designers influence major corporations and create new business alternatives.
The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of Permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS
Tom Kendall grew up and worked on his parents’ farm and took on the farm in 1992 when his father retired. He downsized the 11,000 acre farm to 7,000 acres and converted to Biodynamics. The farm produced wheat and barley and ran cattle and sheep. In 2000 he sold the farm and moved to the Sunshine Coast. In 2005 he and his partner Zaia found their ideal property in Kin Kin, Noosa Hinterland. Tom had by then become interested in Permaculture and started converting the property into a Permaculture site. With his background in farming, he was able to take on most jobs that needed to be done himself; renovations, building, operating heavy machinery for earthworks, etc, gardening, fixing, installing plumbing and many other jobs that came with setting up the property. He became a WWOOF host and always taught the WWOOFers about Permaculture and why the property was set up the way it was. In 2008 he did a Permaculture Design Certificate with Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton. He followed that up early 2010 with a Teacher Training Course with Geoff Lawton.
At that stage he realised he had so much knowledge to share with people about Permaculture and Self-Reliance skills that he decided to focus on teaching. It was a natural extension from teaching wwoofers for all those years. Tom is a very practical person with a wealth of knowledge about shaping landscapes and creating tools and infrastructure. Having spent all his life working the land he has an astute awareness about today’s environmental issues and aims to minimise his footprint as much as possible. His courses are unique in that he shows a lot of practical applications on his property, Maungaraeeda, now a Permaculture demonstration site, to complement the theory taught. His aim is to bring Permaculture to as many people as possible and to empower people to be self-reliant. He is a Permaculture Research Institute accredited teacher and runs The Permaculture Research Institute Maungaraeeda, on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland Australia and is co-founder of the Permaculture Research Institute Luganville, Vanuatu.
Zaytuna Farm has a number of active teaching and support staff, including interns within the PRI diploma program. Interns and staff are mentored by Geoff and will support him throughout this course.
Future Studies and Opportunities
The PDC serves as a foundation for further permaculture work and study and is a prerequisite for the Diploma in Permaculture Design, offered through The Permaculture Institute. Credit for this course is now accepted by a growing number of universities around the world.
ABOUT THE LOCATION
This PDC will be taught at Zaytuna Farm, home of The Permaculture Research Institute in The Channon, Northern NSW. As one of the leading Permaculture demonstration sites in the world, Zaytuna Farm has a range of functioning systems including water harvesting, food production, and a very productive animal husbandry. All of which will add to the learning experience and make this course a very rich experience and one not to be missed.
Historically many PDC’s have, where viable, provided low/no cost scholarships to those from developing countries or communities. At PRI Australia, we support this endeavour by actively providing sponsorship positions at our Master Plan sites in developing countries. Course fees from PRI Australia off-set the cost/s of teaching those in desperate need.
INCLUDED IN YOUR FEES
Your fees include camping accommodation (in self-provided tents), full catering with three meals per day plus morning and afternoon tea, after hours internet access, and an abundance of Permaculture examples throughout the permaculture demonstration farm.
A Permaculture Design Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion.

One of Geoff’s favourite phrases is “getting a result” and his results on the ground and with students is impressive. The quality of a PDC course is not evidenced in the teacher, but in how active the students are able to implement the designs after they leave the course and Geoff has the most active PDC students in the world.
Geoff’s work is based on the permaculture principles laid down in the 1970s by Australian permaculture founder Bill Mollison.
During my stay at Zaytuna Farm I gained an enormous amount of confidence both in my ability to work within permaculture systems, and to teach about them. The vast variety of permaculture systems on the property provide a unique opportunity to to build understanding and hands on skills quickly. One of the most unique aspects of the property is its interconnected nature, specifically with regard to the water systems. I would highly recommend Zaytuna Farm to anyone that is highly…Rob Avis
The October PDC course was the most interesting and intellectually / spiritually / philosophically stimulating two weeks I’ve ever experienced.Ben Smith
All experience is what you make of it – so if you go to PRI, make sure to have the attitude and mindset to make the most out of it. The hands on experience and training at PRI gave me the foothold to pursue my calling which is to love and help as many people as I can. If I knew a better earthly way than permaculture to do that (which there isn’t), I’d be doing it. Thanks Geoff, Nadia,…Nicholas Burtner
My Permaculture journey really began when I sat a PDC with Bill Mollison, Geoff Lawton, and Greg Knibbs in Melbourne in 2008. I found Geoff especially inspiring – his talks opened up a permaculture world of possibilities in me. The following year I began a 4-month stay (internship) with PRI, Zaytuna farm. During this initial time I learned a great deal not only from Geoff and the other knowledgeable people at farm, but also myself. It was great having the…Jonathon Chan
It’s refreshing to see a focus on meeting the needs of the human family and this planet we call home, absent from political borders, abounding in healthful abundance and ideas. Thank you for sharing knowledge.Gina Zook Fielders

The future has arrived and it’s more hopeful and more lovelier than we imagined!Absynnia Black
The best permaculture site to learn from.Taufiq Bin Jemain
Zaytuna Farm is an ideal site for attending your PDC. AS it is a working Permaculture farm it has lots of examples of techniques that you learn in the PDC, so you can see them in action. EG. There are many food forests in various stages and have been established using different strategies and plant mixes. The importance of placement of elements e.g. animals and plants, are seen and felt on a working established farm. There are examples of larger…Karen
