Permaculture Design Certificate Course
The 72-hour Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course allows you to be the change you want to see in the world. Based on Bill Mollison’s Permaculture Designers’ Manual, it provides skills and solid knowledge in Permaculture design as a science that can create abundant ecosystems sustainably in the backyard, a small farm or on a larger broad acre landscape.
The problems of the world are becoming increasingly complex but the answers remain embarrassingly simple.
Permaculture integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies – imitating the no waste, closed loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics and community development.
To date, thousands of permaculture designers have been certified through this course. They now comprise a global network of educators, ecological activists, individuals and groups of committed people working together to change the way we view and design our landscapes. These Permaculture designers influence major corporations and create new business alternatives.
The course covers sustainable living systems for a wide variety of landscapes and climates. It includes the application of Permaculture principles to food production, home design, construction, energy conservation and generation, and explores alternative economic structures and legal strategies supporting permaculture solutions.

ABOUT THE TEACHERS
Geoff Lawton is the main facilitator for this PDC course. He is a Permaculture consultant, designer and teacher. He first took his Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course with Bill Mollison in 1983. He holds a Diploma in Permaculture Education, Design, Implementation, System Establishment, Administration and Community Development given by the founder of Permaculture, Bill Mollison.
Geoff has undertaken thousands of jobs teaching, consulting, designing, administrating and implementing, in 6 continents and close to 50 countries around the world. Clients have included private individuals, groups, communities, governments, aid organizations, non-government organisations and multinational companies.
He has currently educated over 15,000 students in Permaculture worldwide. These include graduates of the Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) Course and courses focused on the practical design of sustainable soil, water, plant, and legal and economic systems.
Damien had his first exposure to permaculture in a design certificate in Thailand, with Geoff Lawton, over 10 years ago. With an undergraduate degree in Environmental Biology and already a fascination and desire to live a natural life he found the perspectives and possibilities presented by permaculture to completely overhaul the way he looked at the world. Damien has worked on several different permaculture projects throughout Thailand and is now full-time staff managing the year-long internship program at Zaytuna Farm.
Damien is a patient and natural teacher with 4 years prior experience as a primary school teacher. As he says “teaching adults is easy after that experience!”. Damien is also a creative and passionate writer with a flair for articulating concepts in an easy to understand manner both in written and spoken forms.
He has chosen to dedicate his life to assisting in realising the possibilities of humanity to move into a truly harmonious and ecological relationship with the land and each other.
Zaytuna Farm has a number of active teaching and support staff, including interns within the PRI diploma program. Interns and staff are mentored by Geoff and will support him throughout this course.
Future Studies and Opportunities
The PDC serves as a foundation for further permaculture work and study and is a prerequisite for the Diploma in Permaculture Design, offered through The Permaculture Institute. Credit for this course is now accepted by a growing number of universities around the world.
ABOUT THE LOCATION
This PDC will be taught at Zaytuna Farm, home of The Permaculture Research Institute in The Channon, Northern NSW. As one of the leading Permaculture demonstration sites in the world, Zaytuna Farm has a range of functioning systems including water harvesting, food production, and a very productive animal husbandry. All of which will add to the learning experience and make this course a very rich experience and one not to be missed.
Historically many PDC’s have, where viable, provided low/no cost scholarships to those from developing countries or communities. At PRI Australia, we support this endeavour by actively providing sponsorship positions at our Master Plan sites in developing countries. Course fees from PRI Australia off-set the cost/s of teaching those in desperate need.
INCLUDED IN YOUR FEES
Included in your course fees is Bill Mollison’s 576 page PERMACULTURE Designers’ Manual.
Your fees include camping accommodation (in self-provided tents), full catering with three meals per day plus morning and afternoon tea, after hours internet access, and an abundance of Permaculture examples throughout one of the most successful permaculture demonstration farms ever built.
WHY DO YOUR PDC WITH the Permaculture Research Institute?
We live what we teach
Zaytuna Farm is Geoff and Nadia’s home. Permaculture is their life. They are farmers, teachers, and designers who actively pursue positive change in this world within their everyday lives and they are willing and able to share that with you for a more resilient future.

Create regular updates on your own Worldwide Permaculture Network blog under your profile, to get noticed, receive friendship, encouragement, and tips.
One of Geoff’s favourite phrases is “getting a result” and his results on the ground and with students is impressive. The quality of a PDC course is not evidenced in the teacher, but in how active the students are able to implement the designs after they leave the course and Geoff has the most active PDC students in the world.
Geoff’s work is based on the permaculture principles laid down in the 1970s by Australian permaculture founder Bill Mollison.
I spent one year volunteering at PRI. During this time I was active in creating food forests, implementing water harvesting systems, helping to manage an edible forest producing nursery, practiced daily in integrated animal systems and dug around in and ate from a rich and diverse vegetable garden. I appreciated being given space to be creative and try new ideas using permaculture principles and felt like I was participating in something greater than my immediate surroundings, part of the permaculture…Robert Gray

Wow, the world looks different, brighter — there is hope in a sustainable future. The hope is in applying the principles of permaculture to the world around me. But where do I begin? What can I do to help create and live a life of surplus so that others can know that permaculture is the best solution for healing the earth while taking care of each other? This is how I felt coming away from my PDC. Yet I didn’t…Shawn Tisdell
We were inspired to learn about permaculture when we saw Geoff’s DVD, Establishing a Food Forest. We then followed up by watching all of the PRI DVDs and we knew that we wanted to do a permaculture design certificate taught by Geoff. Well we weren’t disappointed! Two weeks of back to back lessons interacting with Geoff exceeded all our expectations. We came away from the course knowing that we are now totally dedicated to the permaculture movement and hope to…Andrew Pegler
Growing up and living in cities, I could hardly imagine life on a farm and having to grow my own food. However, doing a 10-week permaculture internship at Zaytuna Farm changed my perception totally of what real sustainable living means and more…. I continued the internship straight after going through a 2-week PDC in April. My course mates from the PDC were 24 others from different parts of the world. The magic of this is that we were able to…Joelyn Ong
A PDC held at Zaytuna farm gives you the enviable opportunity of not only seeing the theory of Permaculture in action, but the optional experience of getting your hands dirty by being involved in the daily activities of a working Permaculture paradise. I found the daily opportunity of working alongside and interacting with those at Zaytuna strengthened my practical skills and allowed me to learn more as they patiently answered my millions of questions. My advice if you get the…Leanne
