Summary
PRI-Kenya’s Permaculture & Regenerative Enterprise Programme is an innovative approach to development aiming to build sustainable livelihoods and food security whilst regenerating the environment in 4 different rural locations in Kenya. We do this through permaculture agroforestry systems where food crops and cash crops are intercropped in a mutually beneficial way. Groups are further supported with ecological value addition, processing and linkages to organic markets.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Kenya is suffering from severe environmental degradation, lack of stable water supply, food and nutrition insecurity and high unemployment in rural areas. Small holder farmers struggle to make a living from poor and degraded soils with climate change and deforestation adding further difficulty. The Maasai women’s groups we work with survive on only a few meals per week. Few opportunities for income generation leads to charcoal burning which further degrades the environment.
How will this project solve this problem?
Our project empowers these farmers to establish productive farms that can provide both fresh organic foods for their families and communities, but also cash crops for income. We provide training in permaculture techniques as well as value addition such as organic soap making; drying of moringa and baobab powder and pressing of oils. In addition we provide training on group dynamics, leadership, business and financial management to support setting up of regenerative enterprises.
Potential Long Term Impact
The project will generate sustainable income for over 500 farmers and 227 Maasai women and their families and dependants. With an average of 6 dependants per household in Kenya that makes nearly 2000 men, women and children who will benefit directly with the wider community also benefiting indirectly from the improved environment and access to organic, nutrient rich fruit and vegetables. Through encouragement of peer to peer education we hope these techniques will spread widely in the community.
