Permaculture Fun in San Diego!

Introducing PRI Tipuana Farm

A few years back Joey Delia had a vision of a Permaculture demonstration site that was highly accessible. Far enough to have a chunk of land but close enough for people from the city to see a real demonstration of Permaculture in action. There began the creation of what is now PRI Tipuana Farm. The search for the right property was long and tedious, but well worth the outcome. The property that is now PRI Tipuana Farm, a PRI Master Plan site, was better than what even Joey had imagined. The farm is situated just outside the city of San Marcos in North San Diego County — a short 7 Minutes to the center of the city, but surrounded by nature and the peace that comes with it. The farm itself is 2.5 acres. To the south, accessible by a trail directly from the farm are acres and acres of wide open California native shrub. There is water, a seasonal creek and a hand dug well. There is also a small 30 year old fruit forest near the house.

After 2 ½ short years we have added 3 swales, 3 composting toilets, rain water tanks, hand dug a well, started a kitchen garden, and made lots of composting, planted almost 200 fruit trees, put in worms, chickens… the list goes on and on. Joey has really done it though. The farm is now offering classes under the Non-Profit Evoke Hope. Under Evoke Hope we have set up booths at local environmentally focused fairs and events. Joey has spoken at the water district among other venues and holds a monthly meeting, Permaculture San Marcos at our local library. Permaculture San Marcos has also come to great success, and is currently working with the San Marcos Youth Commission to install a Community Garden with a food forest and swale at one of our local parks.

Joey offers a farm tour the third Sunday of each month. This has been a huge success and fulfills the vision of sharing Permaculture in action with the community. These tours are always packed and have 30-40 attendees each month! Joey has also given private tours to schools and church groups.

PRI Tipuana Farm is also very excited to be offering our first Permaculture Design Certificate Course in just a couple of weeks! (March 18-29, 2014.) It is set to be an amazing experience and is almost full. The course will be taught by PRI Registered Instructor Owen Hablutzel. Owen has put together an exciting team of teachers for the course, including: Geoff Lawton, Neil Bertrando, Joey Delia, Cathe’ Fish and Loren Luyenduk. The course will be taking place just after the Permaculture Voices Conference which will also be held here, just outside of San Diego. Help us to launch PRI Tipuana Farm on a successful Permaculture journey while furthering your own Permaculture adventures! There are just a few spots left in this PDC so come and join us for 11 days of fun and learning together. Learn more about the course and register at https://www.evokehope.org/events/permaculture-design-certificate-course-pdc-march-18-29-2014.
