The Man Who Planted Trees
I had these YouTube links sent to me by a good friend, Connor (Gareth) Jones from California, USA — a fellow Permie from the January Internship at Zaytuna farm this year (2010).
This movie, while only a story, struck a chord with me and I hope it will with you. Here is some information on the film taken from Wikipedia.
The Man Who Planted Trees (French title L’homme qui plantait des arbres), also known as The Story of Elzéard Bouffier, The Most Extraordinary Character I Ever Met, and The Man Who Planted Hope and Reaped Happiness, is an allegorical tale by French author Jean Giono, published in 1953.
It tells the story of one shepherd’s long and successful singlehanded effort to re-forest a desolate valley in the foothills of the Alps near Provence throughout the first half of the 20th century. — Wikipedia (click for more details)

Great you posted this here Nick! It’s a very beautiful and inspiring animation, and my favorite! (also somehow reminds me of hard working matt kilby too). Thanks!
It’s a beautiful story, and certainly an inspiration as to what can be achieved if you apply yourself steadily to something over time. The modern world is sadly lacking in long-term thinking.
I saw this animation for the first time 20 year ago and i’m still in love with the message it sends! This old shepard is my inspiration and I will do the same in the future :)
Seems the knowledge to save the world, as evidenced in this fable has been around forever, pity the masses are too ignorant to see what is important.
that is who i want to be when i grow up
Beautiful, indeed. Really. One question: Don’t the permaculture has something to say about (against) this oaks monoculture?
David not trying to nasty or anything but that comment proves the shepards need to live in silence. It is such a shame that we all have so much to say!
Amazing stuff, Beautiful, thank you for posting it. It would make a wonderful illustrated story book.
Sort of like a large scale permablitz. :-)
Bazman, indeed it has been made into one, and has sold over quarter million copies. See https://www.chelseagreen.com/bookstore/item/the_man_who_planted_trees:hardcover#
Hi Fiona. I don’t mean to criticize or to speak loud for nothing. I don’t. Sorry again (this post is not moderated). I hope comments can offer place for people who ask unpleasant but helpful question, to go further, or give them a chance to be less stupid, as you try to teach me. Almost everybody knows the Great power of trees. Maybe my question is silly? What I know is that this novel “L’Homme qui plantait des arbres” written by Jean Giono is a fiction. Unfortunately, this story never happened. So, all I ask is: is a monoculture of trees would happen this way? If one day I meet (be) this guy, would I silently think: what you are doing will save the all land, this is perfect…
Anyone aware of this video done in other languages, including Spanish?
