Introduction to Beekeeping using Permaculture Principles

Note: This course is not organised and run by The Permaculture Research Institute. It is facilitated by another organisaton and meets the high teaching standards required by the Permaculture Institue.

Anthony Andrist BA (CSU, Ohio), CELTA, PDC and Internship (PRI) is creating educational coursework on Permaculture and is currently on the managing committee for Permaculture Sydney North as Garden Team Leader.

Anthony Andrist has completed the Pest and Diseases of the Honey Bee with the NSW Dept of Industry and Investment as well as a Natural Beekeeping Course with Tim Malfroy and has been invoved with traditional and commercial beekeeping. He kept beehives at the Permaculture Research Institute at The Channon and currently has beehives at Edenfarms Permaculture.

Anthony has spent significant time in West Africa as a cultural anthropologist and he is devoted to supporting and advocating sustainable community programs and water projects in Mauritania and Somalia.

Course Content

In this 1-day course, students will learn about:

- History of Beekeeping
- Life Cycle of Bees
- Feral v Managed
- Swarming
- Cycles and Seasons
- Flora
- Urban Design and Hive Systems
- Exraction methods

9am - 5pm

Course Location

Edenfarms Permaculture is located at Lansdowne in the scenic Manning Valley on the Mid North Coast of NSW Australia. It is a working property of 600 acres, backing onto the Coorabakh National Park and forming part of the magnificent Lansdowne Escarpment. Beaches are located 15mins away at Crowdy and Harrington. Taree, 20 mins away, is the closest town center - providing train, bus and airport facilities.

Tuition for this course includes transportation if required from Taree, lunch with morning and afternoon tea.

Things students should bring:

- hat
- water bottle
- sunscreen
- mosquito repellent
- boots
- protective clothing
- notebook
- sense of humor

A list of further supplies helpful for the course may be provided in the future. There is no required textbook, but review of the following materials is suggested:

- "Permaculture: A Designers' Manual", Bill Mollison
