International Permaculture Volunteer Opportunity in Uganda

For all those seeking international adventure and to share their knowledge with those who really need it, the Australian Red Cross is looking for a volunteer to fill the position of Permaculture Officer in Uganda. The role is to help subsistence farmers to establish a sustainable, organic and community-owned food supply using permaculture techniques.

Ligingi is a small and beautiful village community in eastern Uganda. The Lingingi Community Learning Centre is run by local villagers and aims to empower the community to become more sustainable.

Red Cross reports that poverty in the village has worsened lately due to changing climatic conditions, fluctuating food prices and a burgeoning population. The successful volunteer will work with the Lingingi Community Learning Centre to help build sustainable, community-owned and democratic food systems.
The volunteer will also assist with the establishment of two greenhouse gardens, create a permaculture network and train farmers in permaculture practice. Sound exciting? It gets better — the role is part of the Australian Volunteers for International Development program and also covers travel, accommodation and living costs, as well as health and security support.

Pack you bags quickly as applications close on 29 August and the assignment begins in November.

  1. I am very interested in this job, but I am not able to make it for this specific position due to that I am right now learning about, and obtaining my certificate for permaculture from May right through to November of 2014. The reason I am writing to you is that I would love to be notified if there is another (similar) position available (anywhere in the world) after November 2014.

    Thankyou for your consideration

    1. Hey,
We have opportunities for permaculture experts to volunteer their expertise and experience on a 5 acre farm just recently purchased.

We’ll be glad to discuss terms of our collaboration

  2. Hi,
I have found out about your amazing project on your website, and like to express my interest into visiting your project and potentially offering to volunteer for you for some period. My fiance and I are going travelling for a year after our wedding at the end of this month, starting in Africa in September.

We’re really keen gardeners and involved with a couple of community projects in London, which are about growing and cooking your own and locally sourced (foraged) foods.Preferably we would like to get involved with a project about food and growing, where we could spend a few weeks to a few months helping out as volunteers. Our initial itinerary for Africa includes Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda then making our way further south. We would very much like to hear from you whether there is an opportunity for us to come and join your project in Uganda?

I have prepared a bit of information about us, that explains what our intentions are. See https://sewandstrum.jigsy.com/volunteering At the bottom of this web page you’ll find a short slideshow with some of our recent experiences with permaculture workshops in London.

It would be great to hear from you. Any information, tips and advice would be welcome.

    Kind regards
    Anniek Wasser
