Just Label It! Tell Congress to Support the New Federal GMO Labeling Bill – We Have a Right to Know

In the U.S., we pride ourselves on having choices and making informed decisions. Under current FDA policy, we don’t have that choice when it comes to genetically engineered (GE) ingredients in the foods we purchase and feed our families. But thanks to your tireless support, Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) will introduce new Federal legislation next week that would require the labeling of all genetically engineered (GE) foods; the first labeling bill to be introduced in the Senate in over a decade!

Tell your Senators and Representative to Co-Sponsor the GE food labeling bill!

Without mandatory labeling of GE foods, consumers are being left in the dark about the foods we are purchasing and feeding our families. Sixty-four countries have mandatory labeling policies for GE foods including South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, China, South Africa, Australia, the the European Union, and many others. The U.S. is one of the only developed countries in the world that doesn’t require labeling. Yet there is overwhelming public demand — consistently near 95% — for the labeling of GE foods. Already in 2013, 53 GE labeling bills have been introduced in 26 states, including Hawaii, Washington, Indiana, Missouri, and Vermont, with more expected by year’s end.

  1. I recently posted a comment here, mentioning an app which enables purchasers to choose healthy food when shopping. It provides a nutritional profile including information about GMO content. I would have thought it highly relevant to this article in providing another resource for those wanting more choice. Certainly emailing senators is important but surely also is using software which provides the information which people are asking for. I can only think my comment was disallowed under the false impression it was promotional. I have no connection with this company and the app appears to be free.

  2. These, just label it campaigns to get food producers to label when their food contains GMO’s are ridiculous. Why wouldn’t companies that produce food that does not contain GMO’s label their food as GMO free? It seems to me there would be much less money spent doing that them trying to compel the others to label their food.

  3. Why is the United States not on the list of countries required to label GMOs? Are Montanto trying to kill us?

  4. Suggest you go to https://www.greenmedinfo.com and look at peer review studies, and you will see why we need genetically engineered food labeled. They certainly don’t meet my criteria of safety; and with the level of additives and toxic chemicals in or on foods labeled “conventional”that’s what’s ridiculous–as if pesticides engineered into food or put on food should be “normal” is beyond me. The bio-magnification and bio-accumulation in the body of chemicals from food, air and water is a lot for bodies to take these days. Chemicals are put in and on food because food manufacturers and growers want to make more money. It doesn’t do a thing for the consumer. I tell me kids if you eat chemicalized foods, you’ll pay at the doctor’s office and reap that. Or, you can pay a little more for healthy foods without chemicals, live healthier, longer and enjoy your life more because you won’t be weakening your immune system. And we should have a choice over any potential genetic alteration. I didn’t have informed consent when GMOs were put into foods that can potentially turn on or off genes at random, produce novel proteins that may not be recognized by the body, create allergic reactions, and there are many implications. Genetic engineering is a relatively new science. When I found out that there were no long term studies before putting into a whole population, and not just given to pigs, I was shocked. Most of the studies before approval were done on rats for only 3-4 months and these were not independently tested or reviewed but done by a young biotech industry eager to get product out there. Government depends on the biotech industry to self regulate. Do I trust that with toxins in food? Further, When I look at baby formula and the amount of high fructose corn syrup and GMO soy, I practically weep out of concern for our vulnerable babies and children, the unknowing and unsuspecting who can’t just go buy organic, healthy food. Those who put poisons on or engineer them into food and put us at risk without exercising the precautionary principle such as done in over 60 countries restricting or banning GMOs, yes. At the very least, GMOs should be labeled.

Here’s a study among numerous from https://www.greenmedinfo.com Cry1Ab protein, a insecticidal toxin found within GMO corn and soy, is found within pregnant women and their fetuses.

With Over 60 countries in the world either restricting or outright banning GMOs in foods, ever wonder why?
