We are also tenants and although we plan to live here for quite a while, who knows what destiny has in store for us. In the six and a half months we have been here the garden has been transformed from lawn and three trees to a growing food forest. We have invested a fair amount of money in some of the plants (at least 70 herbs) figuring that if we do leave we can take cuttings and seeds.

The truth is, I couldn't bear to live here and not have my hands in the soil, and not be harvesting food from the garden. Growing food is like breathing, for me; got to do it!

One of the lovely aspects of living on this particular piece of land is that our rental agreement forbids the use of pesticides and herbicides! Our landlord is a soil scientist!

Let the living pantries grow!

We haven't rented frequently, but when we have we've almost always planted a garden. Some of the best gardens we've had have been on those rental properties! You just never know!

I totally agree with you. Being a renter should not an impediment to growing your own food. We are renters too and have a food production area of roughly 50 sq. m. and four chooks and over a period of 12 months managed to harvest well over 200 kilos of produce plus 846 eggs. We also installed two rainwater tanks and this is the 2nd time around that we are doing it. It is an immense satisfaction to know that I can grow plenty of food in my own backyard - a living pantry. :)
