Richard Heinberg to Speak in Australia

Richard Heinberg, one of the world’s foremost peak oil educators, is finally making a much anticipated speaking tour of Australia in September this year (2012). See the speaking schedule further down this post to find a location near you.

Heinberg is a Senior Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute and renowned author of ten books dealing with declining resources, with particular focus on oil, the latest one being ‘The End of Growth’.

This video introduces you to Heinberg’s concepts, as he discusses The End of Growth.

Heinberg has been honoured with the M. King Hubbert Award for Excellence in Energy Education (2006) and has appeared in several documentaries, most recently Earth 2100, ABC (US) 2009. He has also been interviewed many times, including several times by Peak Moment TV.

My article here includes the episode ‘Suburban Permaculture with Janet Barocco and Richard Heinberg’ , which gives an insight into the man and many of his ideas, as well as some photos from his garden and a round-up of the episode. Well worth watching to see how he not only talks the talk, but walks the walk!

  1. What a wonderful speech!
There is no doubt about that Mr. Heinberg is right. But why does not a single politician care about these fundamental problems? And discuss them? A friend of mine, the former MP in the federal republic of Germany, Herbert Gruhl (he wrote the bestseller “The Plundered Planet”, published already in 1975!) gave the following answer: They are afraid not to be reelected! Because most of the people won´t hear such things. But that means in consequence that the truth ist not useful to get majorities. This is part of the faultiness of democracy.

  2. “why does not a single politician care about these fundamental problems”

Actually, Kelvin Thompson is vocal on these issues, former Senator Nick Minchin touched on them and the Greens touch on some of them too so I wouldn’t say what you said.
